Klaus Knopper a publié KNOPPIX 6.0, une nouvelle version de la populaire basée sur Debian live CD, maintenant avec LXDE comme bureau par défaut et Adriane, un bureau audio pour les malvoyants.

Depuis le changelog: "KNOPPIX 6.0.0 / Adriane 1.1. Knoppix est une distribution GNU/Linux basée sur le système de paquets du système Debian GNU/Linux.
Elle tire son nom de Klaus Knopper, son principal développeur.

Elle se distingue de plusieurs autres distributions en reprenant une idée introduite jadis par l'un des modes d'utilisation de la distribution Slackware : elle ne demande pas d'installation pour qu'on puisse l'utiliser. En d'autres termes, on insère le CD-ROM dans le lecteur comme on mettrait un disque sur sa chaîne, on redémarre l'ordinateur, qui lance Knoppix sans pour autant modifier le système d'exploitation installé (il se relancera au prochain démarrage sans le CD). Knoppix peut toutefois être installée comme système d'exploitation permanent et complet.

En outre, la dernière version de Knoppix est la seule distribution à gérer entièrement et de manière sûre les partitions NTFS (lecture comme écriture).

En contrepartie, pour une utilisation par défaut et complète dans sa langue, il doit exister un CD-ROM par version nationale de Knoppix, puisque le contenu du CD-ROM standard ne peut être altéré lors d'une installation. Knoppix détecte automatiquement le matériel au démarrage. Elle utilise par défaut l'environnement KDE, comme DemoLinux ou Mandriva Move.

La distribution de base tient sur un CD-ROM de 700 Mo, la version étendue sur un DVD de 4.7 Go. Des images disque (ou images ISO) sont téléchargeables librement sur le site web de Knoppix.

Certains nomment les utilisateurs de Knoppix les knoppixiens.

L'une des grandes richesses de Knoppix par rapport aux autres « LiveCD » est qu'elle est constamment mise à jour, intégrant ainsi les dernières technologies (prise en charge de nouvelles normes réseaux, de nouveaux matériels...), un kernel plus récent et des applications corrigées (KDE, Konqueror...).

Knoppix est facilement personnalisable, permettant à l'utilisateur de réaliser son propre cédérom, contenant ses propres programmes et ses propres données, d'où une multitude de produits dérivés.

"Microknoppix" is a complete rewrite of the KNOPPIX boot system with the following features:
1. High compatibility with its Debian base: Aside from configuration files, nothing gets changed in Debians standard installation.

2. Accellerated boot procedure: Independently from the usual SysV bootscripts, multiple tasks of system initialization are run in parallel, so that interactive desktops are reached very fast. The slowest factor is still udev, start time is reduced to about half compared to versions 5.x.

3. LXDE is used as graphical environment, which is a very slim and fast desktop with extremely short starttime and low resource requirements. Because of its GTK2 base, LXDE works together nicely with screenreader Orca.

4. Amount of installed software has been greatly reduced in this first CD-version, so that custom remasters based on CD are possible again. In general, there are much fewer dependencies for the KNOPPIX-specific components, so that even small remasters, 256MB and less, can be created (hence the "Micro" part). [Picture of a SD-flashdisk]

5. Network configuration is being handled by NetworkManager with nm-applet in graphics mode, and textual GUIs in textmode (compatible to Debians /etc/network/interfaces specification, but without ifup/ifdown).

6. A persistent image for saving personal settings and additionally installed programs, KNOPPIX/knoppix-data.img, is supported on the boot device. That way, even the boot system and startup scripts can be changed in the persistent image.
